Project Overview
Background
Public Works Authority (Ashghal) is on track to rehabilitate a wastewater treat plant called Al Karaana Lagoon in Rayyan. The main goal is to eradicate the lagoon and carry out a comprehensive overhaul of the site, in continuance of the measures taken to date to mitigate its environmental impact.
Scope of Work
- Carrying out the design of the wastewater treatment and the soil and water table de-contamination.
- Identifying and qualifying the lagoon’s waters and sludge in order to increase the contamination of the water table and evacuate this waste to the appropriate treatment processes.
- Mobilizing all of its engineering capabilities.
- Execute and analyze the planned designs and documents presented by the pre-qualified contractor.
- Supervising the works.

Additional Notes
Located in the Al Rayyan region, Al Karaana lagoon, which covers more than four square km area is raising serious environmental problems. Almost 60,000 cu m of untreated wastewater per day is discharged onto this site by tanker. Most notably causing the contamination of the water table by infiltration, producing foul odours and creating safety risks connected with the transport of sewage.
Ashgal also pointed out that it’s working towards the eradication of the lagoon and the site’s comprehensive overhaul, in continuation of the measures taken to date to mitigate its environmental impact.
