Project Overview

Background

Qatar Railways Company (QRAIL) is on track to construct Lusail Light Rail Transit (LLRT) Network which will serve the residents of the city by providing an environmentally-friendly mode of transportation that will not only connect destinations within Lusail, but also to Doha by way of the Doha Metro.

Scope of Work

Construction of 38.5 km Lusail Light Rail Transit (LLRT) network involves:

  • Four lines.
  • Approximately 15 km of at-grade revenue, double-track and 5.5 km of at-grade non-revenue single track, 10 km of underground double track (cut and cover) sections, and an underground storage south of the line.
  • 25 stations at-grade in various configurations (centre platform, side platforms and split side platforms).
  • Seven underground stations, four at the Marina District, one at Entertainment City, one at Energy City, and one at Qatar Petroleum District and one at the Pearl-Qatar station.
  • One viaduct to accommodate LRT passengers with a connection to the regional railway.
  • One LRT depot and operation, maintenance and storage facility and test track, utilizing the latest state-of-the-art 'Catenary free' train power service.

Finance

Qatar Railways Company (QRAIL) is the client.

Additional Notes

Just north of Doha, Lusail is an up-and-coming waterfront development that will see the best of innovative sustainability and urban technologies being used to create a city that will house up to 450,000 residents in the future.

The state-the-art Lusail Light Rail Transit (LLRT) network, a tram-based system that will connect all the major points of interest in the city.

A tram may be considered a hybrid between a bus and a train, and offering benefits that are a combination of the two. A tram offers comfort, is clean and non-polluting, quiet, safe, and (although slower than a train but with no traffic to traverse), always on time.

It is also the best use of urbanized space short of an underground metro system as it can handle more passengers than buses. Four lines (Red, Green, Purple, and Yellow) and 37 stations will make up the LLRT network, with one station (at Legtaifiya) allowing passengers to continue on to the country’s capital via the Doha Metro.
